British base in Cyprus hit by Iranian drone/ Limited damage, no casualties

A drone strike hit the British Royal Air Force base in Akrotiri in Cyprus overnight, causing limited damage and no casualties, the Cypriot president and Britain's defense ministry said on Monday. The first attack on a British military facility represents a significant escalation in the conflict.

President Nikos Christodoulides said in a televised address that the Shahed drone caused minor damage when it crashed into military facilities at 12:03 a.m. and that all the republic's competent services are on full operational alert.

"I want to be clear: Our country does not participate in any way and has no intention of being part of any military operation," Christodoulides said.

It was not immediately clear where the Iranian-made Shahed drone was shot down. Two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said British bases intercepted a second drone. While the bases are considered British sovereign territory, Cyprus itself is a member of the EU, currently holding the bloc's rotating presidency.

Akrotiri, southwest of the coastal city of Limassol, is one of two bases that Britain has maintained in the former colony since independence in 1960. In addition to military facilities, it is also home to the families of serving personnel.

Akrotiri, located on a square-shaped peninsula at the southern tip of Cyprus, has been used in the past for military operations in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

On Sunday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain had accepted a US request to use its bases for defensive strikes against Iranian missile depots or launchers.
