Greece, "critical" of the US energy plan - In focus, American gas

The visit of US Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, to Greece, in his capacity as chairman of the White House Energy Dominance Council, highlights the priority that Washington gives to deepening energy cooperation with Athens. “We consider our partnership with Greece, especially in the LNG sector, to be one of the key partnerships at the global level,” said a representative of the council.

Burgum is the first senior U.S. Cabinet official to visit Greece during this presidential term. The move, officials said, reflects the priority that President Donald Trump has given to energy as a pillar of U.S. foreign and security policy. The Energy Dominance Council, created early in Trump’s second term, has taken on a leading role in shaping the country’s energy policy.

The talks in Athens will focus on two main areas: U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and cooperation in the shipbuilding industry. The U.S. aims to increase LNG exports as part of a $750 billion trade deal with the European Union, with a large portion earmarked for U.S. gas. The delegation will assess Greece’s current import capacity, expansion plans and the prospects for meeting the goals of the deal with the EU during the president’s term.

The second part of the agenda focuses on shipbuilding. The delegation will study Greece’s maritime experience and seek partnerships to strengthen shipbuilding capabilities in the US. Cooperation with the Greek maritime industry, which manages the world’s largest merchant fleet, is seen as an opportunity to increase the sustainability of the US supply chain and its global impact.

Analysts in Washington see this approach as part of a broader strategy to counter China's growing influence in the sector.
