Google, 6.8 billion USD investments in Britain/ In focus, the expansion of artificial intelligence and the energy transition
Google announced it will make a new $6.8 billion investment in the United Kingdom. The American technology company also announced the opening of a new data center near London, which will help with growing demand for artificial intelligence-powered services such as Google Cloud, Search, Maps and Workspace.
The Treasury Department said the investment was "a powerful vote of confidence in the British economy and the strength of our partnership with the US." The Alphabet-owned company said the investment is expected to create 8,250 jobs annually in British businesses.
The announcement will be seen as a boost for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government, which aims to attract private investment to boost the slowing economy and restore support in national polls.
Trump's visit is also expected to deepen economic ties between the two Western allies. Senior US officials have said that economic deals worth more than $10 billion will be announced.
In its statement, Google also announced that it has reached an agreement with Shell that will contribute to the stability of the energy grid and the UK's energy transition. The data center near London uses air-cooled technology to reduce water use and is equipped to redirect heat to local homes or businesses, minimizing environmental impact.
Along with clean energy initiatives and a partnership with Shell, Google said its UK operations are expected to run on around 95% carbon-free energy by 2026.
