"EU will seek an agreement with the US" - Trade Commissioner Sefcovic: But we are ready for countermeasures!

"EU will seek an agreement with the US" - Trade Commissioner Sefcovic:

The European Union will try to reach a good trade deal with the United States, while preparing possible countermeasures in case the talks fail, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said.

"We will continue to talk with the US administration and prioritize a negotiated solution by the new deadline of August 1. I cannot imagine that we will leave without any effort," Sefcovic said before a meeting with EU trade ministers in Brussels.

He added that the bloc must be prepared for all eventualities, including, if necessary, well-thought-out and proportionate countermeasures to restore balance. But Sefcovic said that the feeling on our part is that we are very close to an agreement.

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he would impose 30% tariffs on most EU imports starting August 1, although there is still time to reach a deal that would provide lower tariffs. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded that 30% tariffs on EU exports would disrupt essential transatlantic supply chains, hurting businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.

She said the European bloc would extend a moratorium on countermeasures until early August to prioritize negotiations. Meanwhile, the Danish foreign minister said ahead of the meeting in Brussels that it was too early to impose countermeasures and that he hoped the EU would remain united on this front.
