Tourism in Italy, record levels in 2025 - Expected to close with over 479

Tourism in Italy is set to reach record levels in 2025, with the South also expected to grow during the winter months. According to analyses and forecasts from the Ministry of Tourism, in the first nine months of 2025, the number of tourists in Italy exceeded 406 million. Forecasts from the Statistical Office also show that the year could end with over 479 million visitors, an estimated increase of 3% compared to 2024. These figures place 2025 as one of the best years ever for the Italian tourism sector.

Compared to its main European competitors, Italy shows a strong performance. In the period January-September 2025, the country is on par with Spain, which recorded 415.6 million visitors, and surpasses France (401.3 million), Germany (346 million) and Greece (140.4 million).

But if we consider the average length of stay, which in Italy will increase to 3.6 nights in 2025, the country also surpasses Spain (3.4) and again France (2.6) and Germany (2.4).

The overall growth is mainly supported by international demand. In the first 9 months of 2025, the foreign component increased by over 4% compared to 2024, reaching 55% of total flows. With 224.8 million foreign tourists, Italy clearly surpasses France (128 million) and approaches the levels of Spain (264.6 million), confirming its role as a reference destination for trips to the Mediterranean and Europe.

This trend is also reflected in the economic accounts. In the same period from January to September 2025, the tourism balance of payments recorded a record surplus of 19.6 billion euros, 7% more than in 2024. International spending reached 46.4 billion euros, an increase of 4.9%.

The forecasts for the end of the year further reinforce the positive outlook. According to estimates by the Statistical Office of the Ministry of Tourism, December 2025 should close with over 20 million visitors. During this period, the mountains remain the favorite destination for winter holidays and continue to attract tourists. However, the most important element from a territorial point of view is the growth of the southern regions, which lead the ranking of percentage changes.

These data confirm a progressive rebalancing of national tourist flows and the strengthening of the attractiveness of Southern Italy, not only during the summer months, but throughout the year.
