Trump warns of massive cuts - Government shutdown puts many federal employees and projects at risk

US President Donald Trump said federal workers could be laid off and projects suspended if the government shutdown continues. He also announced that Americans could receive refund checks from new tariff revenue.
"If there are layoffs, it's their fault," Trump said of Democrats in Congress. "We could be stopping projects that they've wanted, their favorite projects, and they would be canceled forever," the President added, stressing: "I have the right to stop things that should never have been approved, and I will most likely do that."
The federal government partially shut down on Wednesday after Congress failed to reach a funding deal, with only essential services continuing to operate.
Trump said the revenue from the new tariffs has started to come in and could reach up to $1 trillion a year. He said some of those funds would help reduce the national debt, which he said could reach $38 trillion.
Trump's forecast for the tariffs is much higher than that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who last month said that customs revenue from these measures could exceed $500 billion a year.
Official US Treasury data shows that federal debt has reached $37.64 trillion.
The Republican president said his administration is considering using tax revenue to distribute refund checks to Americans.
"We're also thinking about doing a distribution to the people, almost like a dividend to the citizens of America. We're thinking maybe $1,000 to $2,000," Trump said.
