Britain tightens rules for immigrants - Refugees lose automatic right to family reunification

The British government has announced that it will no longer automatically grant migrants who have been granted asylum the right to permanent residence and family reunification, in a further attempt to limit immigration.
The Labour government is tightening its policies to reduce the support the populist Reform UK party is gaining. The measures are particularly focused on reducing the number of people crossing illegally from France to Britain in small boats.
Currently, migrants with refugee status can apply for permanent residency after five years. Under the new proposal, permanent residency would no longer be guaranteed, but would move to a longer process, which would also include proof of a contribution to Britain.
The government said in a statement that these changes would end an unfair system under which people crossing the Channel in small boats enjoyed greater rights to residence and family reunification than those who arrived legally or even British citizens.
The measures are part of tougher rules for all immigrants, introduced by the Interior Ministry. Requirements include social security contributions, no criminal record, English language proficiency and participation in voluntary community activities. The period required to obtain permanent residence will also be doubled to 10 years.
The announcement also states that refugees will lose the automatic right to bring family members to Britain. The government had suspended family reunification applications since September.
However, official sources assured that the refugees will not be returned to their countries of origin and will benefit from "basic protection." It is not yet known how long refugees who meet the conditions will have to wait to obtain permanent residence.
