What changes does the 2026 draft budget bring to education? - Priorities,

The draft law for the 2026 state budget has been submitted to the Assembly. In this document, the Ministry of Education and Sports has defined reforms, aiming to increase the quality of teaching, adapt education to the needs of the labor market, and improve the quality of life of young people, through increasing their participation in youth and sports activities.

The main focus of the new policies will be to support basic and upper secondary education, modernize curricula, train teachers professionally, and expand the use of information technology in the educational process.

Referring to the draft budget, among the concrete measures that will be implemented are: Increasing the inclusion of children aged 3–6 in preschool education to 83% by 2028; reducing collective classes in pre-university education; providing free transportation for around 35 thousand students and 13,500 teachers who travel distances over 2 and 5 kilometers; training each year of around 50% of basic education teachers and 100 teachers from the diaspora.

On the other hand, the provision of free textbooks will continue for 220 thousand students in basic education and 15 thousand students from needy groups in upper secondary education.

According to the 2026-2028 priorities set by the Ministry of Education and Sports, it is aimed to increase the number of students attending public secondary education from 95% to 98% by 2028. Meanwhile, it is envisaged to increase the number of psychologists and social workers to 450 by 2028; as well as to provide scholarships and financial support for over 4,000 students with special needs, including Roma and Egyptian children, with the aim of ensuring that they attend and complete compulsory education at 100%.

Likewise, there will be investments in the construction of educational infrastructure, technology laboratories, sports facilities and schools according to European standards.

Regarding higher education, the Ministry will offer scholarships to excellent students and those in need, as well as enable the internationalization process through the opening of joint programs with foreign universities.

On the other hand, in the field of vocational education, the Ministry of Education aims to modernize the infrastructure, update the national catalog of qualifications, and involve the private sector more widely in the development of vocational programs.

Referring to the draft budget, among the objectives for vocational education 2026–2028 are: Increasing participation in vocational education to 20% by 2028; employment of 68.5% of graduates one year after completing their studies, as well as increasing the number of students from rural areas and from the Roma and Egyptian communities;

These investments and reforms aim to increase the quality of education, prepare young people for the labor market, and guarantee equal educational opportunities for all citizens, as part of the national objectives for the period 2026–2028.
