Greece, energy prices increase by 21% - They increased for the third consecutive

Wholesale electricity prices in Greece rose for the third consecutive month in October, causing concern among households and businesses due to increased demand expected during the winter.

The average wholesale market price, which is also the main factor for determining variable-price tariffs, was set in October at 112.36 euros per megawatt-hour, with a

The increase in the share of natural gas in the electricity generation mix has been driven by the decline in renewable sources, mainly wind power. This is the main reason for the increase in prices in the wholesale market.

The current situation is a clear indicator of the importance that natural gas continues to have in determining prices, even in a market with a high presence of renewable energy.

Production from green sources fell to 29.3% due to the lack of sun and wind, while natural gas units were forced to work longer hours to meet demand, covering 52.3% of the total.

The average price of a megawatt-hour rose to 137.55 euros, marking a jump of 25.18% in just one day, while the maximum 24-hour price during peak hours reached 305.72 euros.

The price change could directly affect energy bills for citizens and businesses during the winter. Authorities are monitoring the situation and considering measures to mitigate the impact on consumers.
