Germany plans to increase military forces/ Aims to reach 260,000 troops. Mandatory conscription if necessary

The German government announced a plan to increase military forces, including the possibility of introducing partially compulsory military service.
Discussions on how to increase the number of active soldiers and reservists in the Bundeswehr (German army) have increased significantly since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Fears of further military threats from Russia, as well as a perception of insufficient support from the US, have forced European countries to prepare more against a possible Russian attack on NATO.
The government made up of the CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party said in a statement that it has decided to reach a total of around 260,000 soldiers, up from 180,000 currently, as well as around 200,000 reservists.
The plan calls for questionnaires to be sent to all 18-year-olds next year, asking them about their motivation and suitability for the military and informing them about the possibility of voluntary enlistment. For men, responding will be mandatory. A monthly payment of 2,600 euros will be offered to those who voluntarily register.
However, if the target is not reached through voluntary registration, the government also intends to introduce compulsory registration to fill the remaining gaps. The previous target of 203,000 soldiers was not reached through voluntary registration. The recruits will be selected randomly “as a last resort,” the announcement said.
Compulsory military service for men existed in Germany until 2011. Its suspension can be overturned by a simple parliamentary majority. To include women, however, the German constitution would have to be amended.
