Chaos with air flights worldwide - Airbus recalls 6,000 A320 aircraft, software

European planemaker Airbus has ordered immediate repairs to around 6,000 planes worldwide because of software being affected by solar flares. The decision has caused chaos around the world on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Thousands of passengers around the world have been stranded at airports after Airbus ordered immediate software fixes for nearly 6,000 A320 family planes. The decision has affected almost half of the series' fleet and forced airlines to ground planes on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

The directive, one of the most drastic in Airbus' 55-year history, immediately affected travel over the Thanksgiving holiday and extended as far as Australia. The disruption, linked to solar flares, hit Asia particularly hard, but also the United States. American Airlines, the world's largest operator of the A320, said Airbus' decision affected 209 planes, out of more than 340 initially announced.

Airbus said in a statement that it had discovered that intense solar radiation could damage data critical to flight control operations. Meanwhile, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency said in a statement on Friday that a JetBlue flight on Oct. 30 experienced an “uncontrolled and limited event during landing.” The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration also issued an emergency directive, ordering operators of the A320 model to address the problem.

For about two-thirds of the affected planes, the fix will result in a relatively short grounding, while airlines will roll back to an earlier version of the software. On the other hand, hundreds of planes could need to have parts replaced, leading to weeks of downtime. The incident, which prompted Airbus to announce the fix, involved a JetBlue flight from Cancun to New Jersey on October 30. Flight 1230 made an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida, and several people were taken to the hospital after a problem with the flight controls and a sudden loss of altitude. According to Airbus, there are about 11,300 A320 family aircraft in operation, including 6,440 of the base A320 model.
