Producing sneakers with robots! - Successful trial of sports brand in South

Sportswear brand On Running has opened a factory in Busan, South Korea, using robots to produce sneakers and plans to open more robot factories in the United States and Europe as it tries to speed up production and distribution.

Tariff increases imposed by the United States, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical risks are pushing some retailers and brands to explore the “nearshoring” process of production, or bringing it closer to the end consumer.

Caspar Coppetti, co-founder of On, said automation enables the brand to produce shoes faster, with less environmental impact and closer to its core markets compared to the standard shoe manufacturing model, which relies on shipping finished shoes from factories in Southeast Asia and China to buyers in the US and Europe.

Currently, On sources 90% of its sneakers from third-party manufacturers in Vietnam and 10% from Indonesia.

The company first introduced its "LightSpray" marathon sneakers, manufactured with a robotic arm that sprays material onto a mold to create a sock-like upper, during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Busan factory, with 32 robots, is a major expansion from On's first such factory in Zurich, which has just four and began production in July last year. It can produce about 1,000 pairs of shoes a day, using a spray-on method that condenses traditional upper production.

On, founded in Switzerland in 2010, said planned robot factories in the US would help reduce tariff costs.
