The Grand Egyptian Museum "welcomes" tourists - Opens on November 1,

The Grand Egyptian Museum, located near the pyramids of Giza, is preparing for its long-awaited opening on November 1, more than two decades after its construction began.

The museum's main entrance hall, with a grand staircase flanked by pharaonic statues and a commercial annex next to it, opened to the public in February 2023, followed by a "trial opening" in October 2024.

The dazzling collection of King Tutankhamun's treasures and the sun-powered ships buried near the Pyramid of Khufu remain a mystery to the public, awaiting the full opening of the museum, which aims to become one of the world's most iconic cultural destinations. Egyptian officials say several world leaders are expected to attend the official inauguration.

Work on the Grand Egyptian Museum dates back to 1992, when authorities designated a 47-hectare site near the Giza pyramids to build one of the world's largest museums. The first foundation stone was laid in 2002, and a year later, the Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects won the international competition to design the museum.

Construction began between 2005 and 2008, followed by the opening of the Restoration Center in 2010. The facility, originally scheduled to open in 2012, faced years of delays due to cost overruns and political turmoil.

Egyptian sources say the museum will be the largest in the world dedicated to ancient Egyptian civilization, exhibiting artifacts from prehistory to the Greco-Roman era.
