Ferrari introduces its first electric car - The new model is expected to cost

Ferrari has revealed the technology behind its first electric car, the Elettrica. The Italian luxury brand aims to add electric power to its hybrid and petrol-powered models.

The car, which is expected to be presented next year in a global premiere, will have a top speed of 310 km/h, slightly less than most models with a traditional engine, and an autonomy of at least 530 km.

The Elettrica will have a special system that amplifies real vibrations from the electrical structure, to create an authentic sound, which will not simply be an imitation of the engine noise.

The unveiling of Ferrari's first electric model marks a turning point for the automotive industry, which is grappling with the transition from the internal combustion engine to batteries.

"Today is a historic day for us," said CEO Benedetto Vigna, adding that the electric car will complement, not replace, the company's existing models.

Like many other brands, Ferrari has been cautious about electrification. Reuters reported in June that the auto giant has delayed a second electric model until 2028 due to a lack of demand. Rival Lamborghini, part of Volkswagen, has pushed back the launch of its first electric car until 2029, saying the market is not yet ready.

Ferrari plans to have 20% of its models fully electric by 2030, according to its long-term business plan. That's down from the 40% target it set three years ago.

The Elettrica, expected to cost at least 500,000 euros, comes almost two decades after the arrival of hybrid technology in Formula 1 cars in 2009. Ferrari began selling hybrid models in 2019.
