2026, year of long weekends/ Holiday calendar gives 8 extra days off by "transferring" dates

Today, as Muslim believers celebrate Eid al-Fitr, everyone's attention turns to planning the rest of the year. The official holiday calendar for 2026 turns out to be extremely generous with administrative employees and students in Albania. Due to the rule where holidays that fall on weekends are transferred to the first days of the week, the year 2026 will have a long series of "bridges" that allow for three- or four-day holidays, starting this week.
After today's Eid al-Fitr holiday, next Monday, March 23, will be an official holiday as Nevruz Day falls on a Sunday. This trend continues intensively in April, where both Easters, Catholic (April 5) and Orthodox (April 12), being always Sundays, will keep institutions closed on April 6 and 13. This creates a holiday cycle that lasts almost the entire month, ending on May 1, which this year falls on a Friday, ensuring another long weekend for all Albanians.
The second half of the year also holds similar surprises, especially in September and November. Mother Teresa's Feast Day falls on Saturday, September 5, moving the holiday to Monday, September 7. But the real "marathon" happens in November: Alphabet Day (November 22) falls on Sunday, while Independence and Liberation Day (November 28 and 29) fall on Saturday and Sunday. This means that the last week of November will end with a holiday block that lasts from Monday, November 23 to Tuesday, December 1, giving everyone the opportunity to organize a proper vacation on the eve of the end of the year.
This calendar, also confirmed by the Bank of Albania, shows that the year 2026 will have at least eight dates where the "earned" weekend leave will be consumed during the week. For the tourism and services sector, this is a golden opportunity to increase turnover through domestic tourism, while for citizens, it remains the right year to make the most of their free days without having to spend much of their annual leave.
