What does the 550 million euro package for agriculture contain? - Strategy/

Albanian agriculture and rural development are expected to benefit from around 400 million euros in the period 2025 - 2030 in the priority "Healthy and Sustainable Food Chain" as well as around 150 million euros for other measures related to agritourism, education/training, research and innovation, etc., resulting in the most funded sector in the National Smart Specialization Strategy, S3, where innovation is considered a great added value for the country's economy.

In the 2027–2029 priority policy program, innovation in the agricultural and rural development sector is considered to be a significant added value in the country's economy and therefore occupies an important and key place in S3 with the main objective: Transforming the agricultural sector to provide healthy food, focusing on the development of a sustainable food chain, based on tradition, as well as promoting value addition and increased competitiveness in the market. Specifically, the aim is to open the regional innovation center of "EIT Food" and establish certified laboratories at the national level, an initiative with a significant impact on the sector. Other objectives are sustainable agriculture and certification; Increasing the economic viability of farms to face current and future challenges (e.g. climate change), through cost reduction, sustainable production and certification; Food processing and value-added products; Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture; Production of medicinal and aromatic plants, oils and extracts and Strengthening agritourism and business development in rural areas.

In line with this vision, addressing key economic, environmental and social challenges is supported to improve opportunities for the development of agriculture, fisheries and business in rural areas, paying particular attention to gender equality and attracting young farmers and entrepreneurs, to meet the sector's policy priorities and the ambitions of the EU accreditation process.

Agriculture contributes 15.45% of the gross domestic product and employs 36.7% of the country's workforce. Agro-processing has grown significantly over the last 10 years, reaching 24.4% of total agricultural turnover.
