US arms Persian Gulf countries - Trump uses emergency powers with $23 billion

The Trump administration has moved ahead with nearly $23 billion worth of arms sales to three Gulf states, moving to bolster their defenses as the war in the Middle East escalates with no sign of resolution. The government recently approved arms sales to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Jordan.

This included more than $16 billion for air defense systems, ammunition and radar equipment for the three Middle Eastern countries, plus an additional $7 billion in weapons for the United Arab Emirates.

The temporary arms sale, aimed at bolstering the Gulf countries' military capabilities, came as Iran has expanded attacks on several energy infrastructure sites across the region in response to Israeli attacks on its gas facilities this week.

The move would improve the countries' ability to "address current and future threats" and further advance their interoperability with U.S. Joint Forces and other regional forces, the State Department said.

The administration also expanded several previously agreed-upon deals to include the sale of Patriot PAC-3 missiles worth about $5.6 billion and CH-47 Chinook helicopters worth about $1.32 billion. The U.S. also approved $37 million in the sale of Predator XP drones and light aircraft maintenance programs.

For some of the deals, the US government invoked the emergency clause of the US gun control law, a mechanism that allows the executive branch to proceed without the standard 30-day congressional review period, according to the report.
