The 2026 draft budget foresees a significant increase in investments in the environmental sector. According to official data, around 3.1 billion lek will be dedicated to the Ministry of Environment, which represents an increase of over 9% compared to last year.

The priorities for the period 2026–2028 aim to ensure and improve the quality of the environment for the benefit of current and future generations, as well as to create conditions for the sustainable development of the country. Part of the main objectives will be the sustainable use of forest resources, turning them into an important element of tourist value in coastal, mountainous, historical and cultural areas.

Another goal is to increase the area of protected areas and strengthen cooperation between local government units, public institutions and international partners for integrated waste management, with the aim of moving towards a circular economy.

An important part of the program includes promoting the implementation of the waste hierarchy through source separation and large-scale recycling, as well as strengthening environmental education in accordance with the law on integrated waste management.

During the period 2025–2028, it is aimed to achieve measurable improvements in air quality according to the national strategy, improve waste management performance and increase the area of protected areas to 24% of the national territory. It is also expected that 68% of waste will be processed in sanitary landfills and 20% will be recycled by the end of 2028. Another important objective is that 69% of women living in protected areas will be informed about climate change and its impact on the environment.

This draft budget underlines the commitment of the Albanian government to advance towards a greener, more sustainable development in line with contemporary environmental protection standards.
