Only 3% of small businesses export/ Albanian enterprises remain mainly oriented towards the domestic market

Small and medium-sized enterprises continue to hold the main weight of the Albanian economy. According to data published by the Institute of Statistics, in 2024 these enterprises will constitute almost all active businesses in the country and are the main source of employment and economic activity.
Data shows that 99.9% of active enterprises in Albania are small and medium-sized enterprises. These businesses employ 82% of all employees in the economy, confirming their crucial role in the labor market and economic development of the country.
Also, small and medium-sized enterprises realize 81.4% of net sales in the economy, carry out 75% of investments and create 78.1% of value added in the economy. Compared to 2023, their share in the Albanian economy remains almost unchanged.
Comparison with the European Union shows that SMEs have an even greater role in Albania. In EU countries, small and medium-sized enterprises generate about 65.1% of employment, while in Albania this figure reaches 82%. Also in terms of added value in the economy, SMEs in Albania create 78.1%, while in the EU this share is 53.6%.
However, only a small proportion of these enterprises are involved in international trade. In 2024, 3.1% of SMEs are exporting enterprises, while 11.9% are importing enterprises, indicating that the majority of them operate mainly in the domestic market.
By economic sector, microenterprises have the largest share of employment in the accommodation and food service sector. Small enterprises are more concentrated in construction, while medium-sized enterprises have a greater share in the processing industry.
In total, during 2024, there were 119,870 active enterprises in Albania, of which only 174 are large enterprises, while the vast majority are micro, small or medium-sized.
