Baby food, inflation in Albania above Europe/ Families face price increases for

Raising a child in Albania is becoming increasingly expensive, while one of the most basic items of expenditure, baby food, has seen significant price increases during 2025.

According to Eurostat data on the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices, the average annual inflation for baby food in Albania, for the period January-November 2025, was around 3.1%. In the same period, the European Union average was around 1.2%, which means that prices in Albania have increased more than twice compared to the EU.

Baby food is a necessary and unavoidable expense for families with young children. Unlike other consumer products, these products cannot be easily replaced or removed from the monthly basket, making any price increase a direct burden on family budgets.

The data show that price pressures increased significantly during the spring. In April, May and June 2025, inflation for this category reached levels of around 5%, reflecting an acceleration in costs for families with children. Although the pace slowed somewhat in the following months, prices remained at higher levels than at the beginning of the year.

At the European level, the strongest price increases for baby food during 2025 were recorded mainly in Central and Eastern European countries. According to Eurostat data, Kosovo recorded the highest rates, with double-digit increases that peaked at over 15% at the end of the year, followed by Hungary, Malta, Slovenia and Latvia, where inflation for this category fluctuated between 6% and 9% in some months of the year. In contrast, a number of Western European countries, such as France, Belgium and Finland, recorded negative inflation or very low increases, reflecting greater price stability for this essential category.
