How do Albanians view the economic situation? RCC: Albania with less negative perception than North Macedonia and Serbia

From Eldiona Serani

Citizens' perception of the state of the economy in the Western Balkans remains significantly negative. The latest Balkan Barometer 2025 data shows that the vast majority of respondents assess the economic situation in their countries as bad or very bad, reflecting strong concerns about living standards, purchasing power and economic insecurity.

What is particularly striking is the fact that no citizen in the Western Balkans rates the state of the economy as "very good".

In Albania, the perception of citizens remains largely negative. 61% of respondents assess the economic situation as not good, specifically 35% see the situation as “fairly bad” and 26% as “very bad”. On the other hand, a significant portion of citizens (35%) express neutrality, while only 4% see the economy as “fairly good”.

The most severe situation is perceived in Bosnia & Herzegovina, where 62% of citizens consider the economy to be “very bad”, the highest percentage in the entire region. Only 1% say that the situation is “fairly good”, while 27% describe the economy as “fairly bad”. This indicates a high level of dissatisfaction and a lack of confidence in short-term improvement.

In Serbia, 70% of citizens consider the economy to be in a bad state, with 41% calling it “fairly bad” and 29% “very bad.” Only 5% express a positive opinion, while a quarter maintain a neutral stance.

In Kosovo, too, the perception is largely negative, with 69% of citizens assessing the economy as bad or very bad, while 29% hold a neutral stance. In North Macedonia, the situation is similar, with 72% of respondents expressing a negative view of the economic situation.

On the other hand, in Montenegro, negative assessments are almost equally divided between “fairly bad” and “very bad”, at 36% each, bringing the total negative perception to 72%.
