Where does economic growth come from? About 940 million euros more, but not from the pockets of families

The country's economy grew by 3.75% in real terms during the third quarter of 2025, compared to the same period a year earlier. But the question arises, how much is the growth in lek? "Scan Intel" has made a simple calculation starting from the above figure. If the 3.75% growth is projected on the annual GDP level for 2024, which was estimated at around 2.52 trillion lek or around 25 billion euros at current prices, this translates into around 94 billion lek, or approximately 940 million euros more economic activity on an annual basis.
However, data show that this growth has not been primarily based on population consumption.
According to the expenditure approach, final consumption of the population increased by only 1.25%, indicating a weak increase in domestic demand. In contrast, final government consumption marked a significant increase of 7.72%, becoming one of the main factors that have driven economic growth during this period.
Meanwhile, investments, measured by the gross fixed capital formation component, increased by 4.78%, reflecting expansion of investment activity in the economy.
Exports of goods and services also made a significant contribution to the growth of Gross Domestic Product, which increased by 12.55%. However, imports also increased by 5.47%, which indicates that economic growth continues to be associated with dependence on foreign markets.
The data suggest that, despite economic growth, the benefit to households remains limited, while the main weight of growth continues to rely on public spending and the external sector.
