Albania climbs in global economic freedom rankings/ The country leads the region and several important economies in Europe

Albania is ranked 46th in the world in terms of the index of economic freedom published by the Heritage Foundation. According to this report, our country has managed to accumulate about 68 points in the assessment, positioning itself in a relatively good ranking among the 176 countries considered. This result classifies the Albanian economy in the category of “most free” economies. Compared to last year, our country has improved in score and positioning after last year it was ranked in 50th place
One of the striking elements in this report is the fact that the Albanian economy is considered to be cheaper than some important European economies, such as France and Spain. This shows that, in some indicators related to market functioning, business climate and economic policies, Albania appears in a competitive position compared to some developed European countries.
Compared to the countries in the region, Albania is among the freest economies. Serbia ranks immediately after our country, holding 62nd place with about 65 accumulated points. Further, Montenegro ranks 70th with 63.8 points. Meanwhile, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are respectively positioned in 74th and 76th places in the ranking. The last place in the region is held by Kosovo, which ranks 81st with 62.4 points. However, all countries in the region are classified in the category of moderately free economies, which shows that the levels of economic freedom in the Western Balkans are relatively close.
In terms of the global ranking for 2026, the country with the freest economy in the world is Singapore, which tops the list with 84.4 points. It is followed by developed economies such as Switzerland, Ireland, Austria and Taiwan, which are characterized by open markets, stable economic policies and low levels of state intervention in the economy.
At the other end of the ranking, the country with the least free economy remains North Korea. This is mainly due to its centralized political and economic system, where the state completely controls economic activity. It is followed by other countries with similar political and economic systems, such as Cuba, Venezuela and Sudan.
The Index of Economic Freedom measures several important components of the functioning of an economy, such as the level of state intervention in the market, business freedom, fiscal policies, openness to international trade, and the protection of property rights. Based on these indicators, the report aims to provide a general overview of the degree of economic freedom in different countries of the world.
