How much does the record of remittances weigh in Albanian homes? Of the 1.12 billion euros, the largest portion is kept at the table

Albanian emigrant remittances reached 1.12 billion euros in 2025, the highest level ever recorded. But this figure becomes more understandable when you go down from the macro to the household level.
Taking as a basis 756 thousand households registered by the 2023 Census, and applying to them the profile of the 2024 Migration Survey, a significant calculation results. If 37% of households have at least one immigrant and approximately half of immigrant households, specifically 48%, have received remittances, then the money coming from abroad has affected about 134 thousand households nationwide. According to the survey, for beneficiary households, remittances constitute 41% of total income.
Translated into value, the record flow of 1.12 billion euros equates to an average of about 8.3 thousand euros per year per beneficiary family, or approximately €695 per month. This is an amount that speaks louder than the record itself. Remittances are not simply an indicator of foreign exchange inflows, but a direct part of the monthly budget of thousands of Albanian families.
Even more significant is the use of this money. The survey shows that 90% of beneficiary families use remittances for food and daily needs, 36% for health expenses and 30% for education, while less than 2% for business expansion or agricultural inputs. Translated into the number of beneficiary families, this means that about 121 thousand families use this money for daily meals, about 48 thousand for health, about 40 thousand for education, while less than 2,700 for productive investment.
In an Albania where more than one in three families has at least one immigrant member, remittances are serving primarily as support for daily life, while their role in investment still remains limited.
We emphasize that the figures for the number of beneficiary families and the monthly average are illustrative calculations, constructed by combining the total of households from the 2023 Census with the weights reported from the 2024 Migration Survey and the total amount of remittances for 2025. They do not represent a direct administrative count.
