How many diaspora does Albania have? Around 2.2 million Albanians live abroad,

Albanian emigration continues to remain one of the most important demographic and socio-economic phenomena for the country, directly influencing both internal developments and relations with host countries. According to INSTAT estimates, the Albanian diaspora reaches 2.2 million individuals living outside the territory of Albania, of which 1.1 million are men and about 1 million are women.

The data show that the Albanian diaspora has a predominantly young and economically active profile. Around 77% of emigrants belong to the 15–64 age group, while 18% are children and only 5% are over 65. This demographic distribution shows a high potential for contribution to the labour markets and economies of the host countries, but at the same time highlights the challenges that Albania faces in terms of the loss of the active labour force.

Albanian emigration is closely linked to the country's geographical position and the history of movements over the centuries. The Albanian diaspora appears heterogeneous, both in terms of the time of migration and in terms of regional origin. The earliest Albanian communities are the Arbëreshë in Italy and the Arvanites in Greece, which constitute early evidence of Albanian presence abroad.

According to the latest population and housing census data, round 2021 for European countries, around 1.1 million individuals born in Albania are habitual residents in 31 European countries. Meanwhile, citizenship statistics show that around 939 thousand Albanian citizens live in these same countries. Italy, Greece, Germany, France and the United Kingdom top the list of countries with the highest number of Albanian emigrants, confirming the key role of these countries as the main destinations of Albanian emigration. On the other hand, the United States hosts the most educated migrants (almost a third with higher education), followed by Germany and the United Kingdom.
