How many inhabitants live in 1 km² in the counties of Albania? In Tirana,

Internal migration in Albania has played an important role in changing the population distribution between counties, creating marked demographic contrasts. Residents are moving from rural areas to urban centers, mainly in counties such as Tirana and Durrës, which offer more employment opportunities and services. This phenomenon has influenced not only the increase in population density in these areas, but also the shrinking of the population in the most distant regions.

"Scan Intel" has processed the figures to understand how the population density indicator is presented in the counties of the country. The data position Tirana as the county with the highest density, with 459.1 inhabitants/km², followed by Durrës with 296.2 inhabitants/km² and Fieri with 127.2 inhabitants/km². But, compared to the data of CENS 2011, we noticed that the contraction has not "saved" even these counties. Specifically, in a decade the population density in Tirana fell by 5.1 inhabitants/km². In Durrës, the density decreased by 46.8 inhabitants/km², from 343 inhabitants/km² to 296.2 inhabitants/km². Whereas, in Fier, the decline was even more pronounced, with a difference of 36.8 inhabitants/km².

In contrast, peripheral counties such as Gjirokastra, Kukësi and Dibra have much lower densities, respectively 20.8, 26.1 and 41.4 inhabitants/km². These figures reflect continued emigration from these areas to larger urban centers or abroad. While the situation is more normalized in counties such as Berati, Elbasani and Lezha, where the population density is 78.4 inhabitants/km², 72.7 and 61.3 inhabitants/km² respectively

The average population density in Albania is about 105 inhabitants per square kilometer, a level that has seen little change in recent years, but trends show a deepening disparity between counties. Concretely, only Tirana and Durres have above average density, and this happens because of the infrastructure developed in these counties.

Likewise, the process of population aging and the decline in birth rates, combined with high emigration, have had a negative impact on maintaining a relatively young population in low-density counties.
