Agriculture/ Men hold the "purse", women ensure quality - Report/ Over

The agricultural sector has pronounced gender inequalities in terms of the division of agricultural tasks within the family. Men mainly dominate the financial side such as buying inputs and selling products, while women play a more essential role in the field.

Referring to the report recently published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Swiss Government, on the role of women in ensuring the quality of agricultural products, focused on the sector of medicinal plants, it emerges that to decide which culture must be planted, in 64.4% of cases this responsibility is attributed to men, and to decide to whom the products should be sold, again in 65.2% it turns out to be men's responsibility. A smaller percentage believes in the equal sharing of decisions between women and men.

Likewise, although this sector employs over 60,000 women, the management of farm/household finances is overwhelmingly attributed to men. 63.2% of respondents perceive them as the main responsible, while only 26.4% attribute this role to women.

A minority believe in the equal sharing of this responsibility (10.4%), underscoring traditional gender norms in managing finances within agricultural households.

In stark contrast, with regard to daily chores, the survey reveals a significant perception gap, with 76.9% of respondents attributing this responsibility primarily to women within the family.

According to the report, the significant involvement of employed women in field activities and their contributions to post-harvest processing highlights their crucial role in quality assurance.

The findings highlight the need to address gender inequalities in the distribution of labor and to recognize the critical role of women in improving product quality and export competitiveness.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) suggests that access to all production processes is essential for women's progress in self-employment, especially with regard to product quality. While more access to training and funding is recommended.
