Spain fines Ryanair and EasyJet for "abusive" fees - Ministry of

Spain's Consumer Rights Ministry fined five low-budget airlines for "abusive practices", including extra fees for cabin baggage.

Ryanair was hit with a fine of 107.78 million euros. Spanish low-cost airline Vueling was ordered to pay €39.2 million and EasyJet was fined €29 million. Meanwhile, the second largest Norwegian airline and the Spanish airline Volotea received fines of more than 1 million euros each.

"The five airlines should stop their practice of asking for additional payment for cabin baggage," the ministry said.

Airlines were also criticized for "abusive" fees for printing tickets, not clarifying price information on their websites and not allowing cash payments at Spanish airports.

Spain's Air Lines Association (ALA) said it will appeal the fines for cabin baggage fees in court, calling them "illegal" and against European norms.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said he would immediately appeal Spain's illegal and unjustified baggage fines, saying the sanctions, which "were invented by Spain's Ministry of Consumer Rights for political reasons, are clearly in violation of EU law".

Last month, a GlobalData report predicted that the low-cost carrier market will grow at a compound annual rate of more than 10% over the period 2023 - 2028, citing affordability as a key priority for airlines. such, which implement cost-cutting measures, such as additional fees for baggage and in-flight meals.
