The migration experience is playing an increasingly important role in increasing the human capital of Albanians, particularly through education and international work experience. Data show that a significant proportion of Albanian migrants choose to pursue higher education or acquire professional skills abroad, improving their prospects in the labor market.

More than a quarter, 27% of current emigrants who hold a higher education degree, have completed their university education outside Albania, a significantly higher percentage compared to returning emigrants, where this figure is around 10%. This difference signals an increase in emigration for educational purposes, especially among the younger generations. In parallel, around 60% of emigrants report that they have increased their human capital through international work experience, which is associated with concrete salary benefits upon return to Albania.

Young people aged 15–24 are the most active age group in pursuing education abroad. Around 20% of emigrants and returnees from this age group have achieved their highest level of education outside Albania, while the tendency to study abroad decreases significantly with increasing age. More than one in three individuals in this age group have completed higher education abroad, reflecting increased student mobility, scholarship opportunities and targeted migration for studies.

Higher education remains the dominant level of study abroad for current emigrants. Almost one in four emigrants under the age of 30 are currently enrolled in educational institutions outside Albania. Of these, 59% are pursuing higher education studies, while 36% are enrolled in upper secondary education, clearly indicating the orientation of young people towards more advanced qualifications.

Overall, the data suggest that emigration is not only an economic movement, but also a long-term investment in human capital, which benefits both individuals and the Albanian economy in the long term.
