Who is knocking on banks' doors the most? Extractive and processing industries lead credit growth in July
In July 2025, new loans to private non-financial corporations reached around ALL 19 billion, marking a decrease of 7.6% compared to the same month last year. According to data from the Bank of Albania, the lending landscape appears fragmented, with sectors recording strong growth and others experiencing significant contraction.
While trade leads with the highest value, the extractive industry leads with an extraordinary growth of over 300%, reaching almost 489 million lekë. A strong dynamic was also registered in professional and technical services, where lending increased by over 15 times within a year, as well as in administrative services, which benefited from 85% more financing.
The processing industry also had a positive performance with over 53% growth, reaching 2.6 billion lek, while information and communication, real estate, and accommodation and food services also recorded significant growth.
On the other hand, construction, one of the largest borrowing sectors, shrank by 34%, falling to around 2.1 billion lek, while electricity and gas supply lost over half of last year's financing.
Transportation and storage suffered a similar decline, while education and health also recorded contractions, by 49% and 1.8%, respectively.
The exception is arts and entertainment, which saw a strong recovery with almost a doubling of borrowing. Interestingly, loans to public administration, although modest in numbers, recorded a very high nominal increase due to the low base of the previous year, while for international organizations an inflow of 16 million lek was recorded for the first time.
