The government aims to establish the National Waste Treatment Operator, as a state-owned company with powers to build, operate and finance waste infrastructure at the national level.
During the presentation of the integrated waste management reform, it was announced that the proposed model has been taken over by OSHEE and OST, while municipalities will retain the function of cleaning the territory.
Meanwhile, according to Prime Minister Edi Rama, integrated waste management is one of the main challenges towards the country's membership in the European Union.
During the event, Kumbaro also presented the investments in progress in the Waste Management Areas of Berat, Dibër, Korçë, Durrës, Vlora-North, Gjirokastër – Vlora South and Kukës, from the end points to the closure of substandard landfills. According to Kumbaro, there are currently 90 illegal landfills.
