Credit for the economy crosses the threshold of 1 trillion lek/ New loans increase by 32%, housing financing increases significantly

Credit to the economy has crossed the 1 trillion lek threshold for the first time, marking a new historical level. According to data from the Bank of Albania, at the end of July 2026 the total credit stock reached over 1 trillion lek, from around 993 billion lek in June.
Within just one month, credit to the economy expanded by about 7.7 billion lek, while compared to the beginning of the year, the increase amounts to more than 61 billion lek. Crossing the 1 trillion lek mark confirms the continuous expansion of financing of the economy by the banking system.
Strong growth was also recorded in new loans. During July, banks disbursed a total of 38.2 billion lek in new loans, up from 28.9 billion lek in July last year. This translates into an annual increase of about 32% and is the highest level for July in the data series since 2016.
Businesses continue to receive the bulk of financing. New loans to private corporations reached 24.2 billion lek, up from 19.1 billion lek a year earlier, marking an increase of about 26.8%.
Even stronger was the growth in borrowing by individuals. New loans to individuals reached 13.9 billion lek, or about 42% more compared to July last year. This is also the highest level recorded for a July in the period of published data.
A significant portion of this growth comes from loans for home purchases. In July alone, banks granted about 7 billion lek in new home loans, up from 4.65 billion lek a year earlier. The annual growth rate is over 50%, indicating that demand for bank financing for property purchases remains very strong.
July data thus show an acceleration in lending to both businesses and households.
