Production from solar power plants increases - 448 GWh in 3 months, share in domestic production reached 19% for the period April-June

The rapid expansion of photovoltaic capacities is increasingly reflected in the country's energy balance. Data from the Institute of Statistics for the second quarter of this year show that production from other renewable sources, which mainly includes photovoltaic energy, reached 448 GWh, up from 288 GWh in the same period last year, or 55.6% more.
The increase in production led these sources to provide 19% of all electricity produced in the country during the April-June period. In total, domestic production reached 2,361 GWh, with 42.8% provided by public hydropower plants and 38.2% by private and concessionary hydropower plants.
The data confirms a trend that has accelerated significantly in recent years, in parallel with the increase in photovoltaic power plants. According to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, the installed capacity of solar power plants has multiplied, from just 21 MW in 2020 to 631 MW at the end of 2025. In the last two years alone, the expansion has been strong, from 188 MW in 2023, to 449 MW in 2024 and 631 MW in 2025.
In the same period, the number of photovoltaic plants increased from 10 to 53, while annual solar energy production expanded from around 32 thousand MWh in 2020 to over 832 thousand MWh last year.
The growth of other renewable sources is gradually changing the structure of energy production in the country, which has historically been dominated almost entirely by hydroelectric power plants. However, the rapid expansion of photovoltaics is also bringing the need to manage energy production during the hours when solar radiation is highest. For this reason, some of the large photovoltaic projects in the country have initiated procedures for the integration of energy storage systems.
