Tax paid on rents and salaries increases - 613 million euros in 7 months. 17%

Taxing labor and short-term or long-term rentals has brought more revenue to the state budget during the first 7 months of this year.

According to official data from the Ministry of Finance, Albanian citizens have "shared" from their personal income in the form of taxes, about 56.6 billion lek, or approximately 613 million euros.

The largest share of personal income tax is tax on wages and other income, including those from long-term rentals and accommodation platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com.

Compared to the same period a year ago, revenues from this item have increased by 8.3 billion lek or 17.3%, more than in the first 7 months of 2025 and 0.8% above the planned amount. While in July alone, 9 billion euros were collected.

Compared to the same period in 2016, when revenues were recorded at 19 billion lek, there has been a tripling of revenue.

According to the tax administration, this increase is closely related to improved formalization in the economy and increased income declaration. Campaigns against informality, especially those targeting under-declaration of wages during 2025, seem to have influenced the change in business behavior.

Also, the establishment of reference wages in sectors with a high level of informality, such as tourism, construction and healthcare, has led to an increase in declared wages and, consequently, in tax liabilities. Wage increases in public administration over the last two years, as well as the increase in the minimum wage to 50 thousand lekë, have also had an impact.

Another contributing factor is the expansion of the rental market, especially short-term ones related to the development of tourism. The increase in properties listed on online platforms has increased the income of individuals and at the same time the level of tax paid. Meanwhile, in parallel, the anti-informality operational plan is being implemented in this sector, which has led to the identification of evasions, as well as an increase in declarations.

The tax that individuals must pay on this income is 15 percent and the same applies to long-term rentals. The total receipts from TAP also include income from bank interest.
