Women and children exposed to economic insecurity/ Despite the decline in

The latest data from the Income and Living Standards Survey show that the risk of being poor in Albania has continued to decrease, reaching 19.2% in 2024, from 19.8% a year earlier and 22% in 2021. This indicates a gradual improvement in economic conditions at the national level, although inequalities between age groups and genders remain evident.

The group most at risk of poverty continues to be children and young people under 17, with the risk reaching 26.6% in 2024. Although this figure is lower in the four-year period, it remains significantly higher than the national average. Economic experts attribute this to the lower incomes of young families and the lack of sufficient support for children in need.

In the 18-64 age group, which includes the active population in the labor market, the risk of poverty has undergone a steady decline, falling from 21.8% in 2021 to 18.6% in 2024. This trend is interpreted as an effect of the increase in minimum wages and improved employment opportunities after the pandemic.

Meanwhile, for people over 65, the poverty rate remains lower compared to other groups, at 13.8% for 2024. Although this indicator has fluctuated slightly over the years, the difference between men and women in this group is still noticeable, 14.7% for women versus 12.8% for men.

Across all age groups, women have a higher risk of being poor than men. By 2024, the gender gap ranges from 0.4 to 1.9 percentage points, indicating that women remain more exposed to economic insecurity.
