High temperatures extend the tourist season - Topuzi: Workforce and infrastructure, the challenges of year-round tourism

July and August remain the most consolidated months of tourism in Albania, but the tourist season is no longer limited to these two months. High temperatures and the change in the way travel is organized are pushing the sector towards a longer season, including the spring and autumn months.
"The changes in the high temperatures of July and August have led to a re-dimensioning of the way of doing tourism by avoiding those two hot months and using the two parts... June-May and... September-October. This has meant that Albania is no longer stuck with that 60-day tourism. July and August have now been consolidated and are no longer discussed, but the season has begun to be extended to other months and up to 8 or 10 months. Of course, this requires commitment, politics, both from the private sector and from the state."
But extending the season, according to Topuz, requires more than favorable temperatures. One of the main problems remains the workforce, especially seasonal contracts, which need to be transformed into more sustainable employment.
"There are several main challenges to achieving this type of development, namely to have tourism that lasts more than two or four months. The workforce, extending contracts from two to four months to return contracts to 8 or 10 months to have stable and quality employees. Infrastructure, so if we are not able to respond with energy, water, and territory cleaning throughout the entire period, not just two or three months, then this is a problem and requires a commitment from all structures now, not only the private sector, education, but also the central government and local government. Of course, another problem is the diversification of the tourist product. So, tourists are no longer looking for just sand, sea, and a bed, but they are looking for other activities: gastronomic, cultural, trails to visit. And in Albania, an interesting thing is being noticed: tourists, despite coming in the July-August period, are also interested in the rest of Albania. So, we don't have just sand and sea packages, but we have packages spread out, two-three days in sea, two or three days in the mountains, passing through the entire territory of Albania."
