"Doubling teachers' salaries" - European education unions, roundtable discussion in Tirana

Teacher licensing is a legal obligation and all teachers who graduated after 2012, who have not taken the licensing exam, must do so. This was stated by the President of the Independent Education Union of Albania, Nevruz Kaptelli. Among other things, the head of the union also listed the main problems of education.
"Teacher licensing is a legal obligation. If they are not licensed, then they cannot make parallel moves and may lose the right to practice the profession. The exam is simple, it is only related to their education. They will not be removed from the education system, but must practice their profession peacefully. We demand an increase in teachers' salaries, material and moral appreciation. We are focusing on increasing the budget for public education, because in many countries, students are being oriented towards non-public education. The UN and UNESCO are focused on increasing the budget for education", says Kaptelli.
The head of the Federation of Education and Science Trade Unions, Shpëtim Brahaj, also called for doubling salaries and drafting facilitating policies so that young people choose teaching as a profession.
"We have constantly requested that the teaching profession should become popular. These are policies that the ministry and the government should implement, the main one being the doubling of salaries. The government should definitely intervene to provide soft loans for young families of teachers, the quotas are not enough. The number should be increased, surveys should be conducted to see how many young couples may need a house. Even the fee for transportation and the difficulties of the work should be higher ," says Brahaj.
The President of the European Trade Union Committee for Education, John MacGabhann, said that Albania has made progress, but there is still much work to be done.
The statements were made within the framework of a roundtable held in Tirana with representatives of education unions, international organizations and European institutions from various Central and Eastern European countries.
