Food safety, AKU merger warned - Placing chicken meat with salmonella on the market speeds up the process
The latest case of the release of a significant amount of salmonella-tainted chicken meat has called into question the future of the national food authority.
Although it was this institution that discovered the case through a routine inspection, the efficiency of the institution has been questioned. This is due to the fact that cases of food safety violations, both in the domestic market and in exports, have been frequent in the last year.
A law approved by the Assembly in September 2024 provided for the dissolution of this institution.
According to the new Inspection Law, all inspectorates in the country will be merged into only 8 central inspectorates, which will deal only with a few specific areas that the Ministry of Entrepreneurship will designate based on risk.
One of these 8 central inspectorates will also have a structure that will handle food issues, which is currently done by the NFA, and which will be replaced within the year with the "structure responsible for official veterinary and plant protection inspection and control".
The law was published in the Official Gazette on November 13 and enters into force on May 13. The institutions then have 6 months to complete the bylaws to establish the other 8 inspectorates.
