Albanians, fewer asylum requests in the EU - Ministry of Interior: From January

The number of Albanians being rejected at the borders of European Union countries is increasingly falling. According to data from the Ministry of Interior, during the period January-May of this year, 3,261 Albanian citizens were turned back, rejected, or forcibly removed after applying for asylum.

This figure marks a decrease of 8% compared to the same period last year. The main reason is closely related to the overall decline in asylum applications in EU countries, although detailed official data on this indicator have not yet been published by the Ministry of Interior or EUROSTAT.

After a peak in 2021, when around 13,200 asylum applications were registered, a wave that coincided with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, requests have been declining. In the period January-November 2024 alone, according to Eurostat, around 6,800 applications were registered from Albanians, marking the lowest level in a decade.

In this context, host countries are increasingly tightening their policies. Germany, under the new government of Friedrich Merz, has announced that from May 6, 2025, it will begin to ban entry at the border for asylum seekers who do not meet the conditions, returning them without a full procedure. Italy, meanwhile, is moving some of its asylum applications to special centers outside its territory, such as in Albania.
