Albania, European champion for families with children More than 6 in 10 families share the table with the next generation
Albania holds the record in Europe for the highest percentage of families with children. According to the latest comparative data from INSTAT and EUROSTAT analyzed by “Scan Intel”, about 62.5% of Albanian families have at least one child, while the European Union average is only 23.6%. The difference is deep and persistent in all subcategories where in Albania, 28.4% of families have one child, 24.6% have two, and 9.4% have three or more. In the EU, these percentages are respectively 11.7%, 8.9% and only 3%.
Large countries like Germany and Italy have a much lower share of families with children, 20% and 22.2% respectively. Even countries that have traditionally had higher birth rates, like France with 26.6% or Sweden with 25.2%, lag significantly behind Albania.
After Albania, the highest percentages of families with children were in Slovakia with 35.6%, Ireland with 31.0% and Cyprus with 28.6%. In contrast, the lowest percentages were recorded in Finland with 18.0%, Lithuania with 19.6% and Germany with 20.1%.
Meanwhile, countries in the region such as Serbia with 26% and Romania with 27.5% reflect a faster transition towards smaller family structures.
These data confirm a strong feature of Albanian society: the family with children continues to remain the dominant format, at a time when most developed countries are facing an increasing number of childless families and an aging population.
But the high percentage of families with children does not automatically translate into sustainable demographic growth. Albania, despite having the youngest family structure on the continent, faces massive emigration, declining fertility, and economic difficulties.
