Former Russian Transport Minister Found Dead - Russian Media: Roman Starovoit

Roman Starovoit, Russia's former transport minister, was found dead hours after being dismissed from his post. According to Russian media, the former official is suspected of committing suicide.

Hours after being dismissed from his post as Minister of Transport, Roman Starovoit has taken his own life. According to Russian media, the former official shot himself.

This news was also confirmed by the Russian authorities, as according to the Investigative Committee, "the body of former Russian Minister of Transport Roman Vladimirovich Starovoit was found in his car today. He had suffered a bullet wound."

Hours before the event, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed his Transport Minister, a sudden move that comes at a time of significant challenges for the sector as the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year.

Putin's decree did not justify the dismissal of Roman Starovoit, who had been in the post for only a year. Starovoit was appointed minister in May 2024, after spending nearly five years as governor of the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine.

However, his dismissal came after around 300 flights were cancelled at major airports over the past weekend, due to the recent Ukrainian drone attack.

The Kremlin announced that Andrei Nikitin, a former governor of the Novgorod region, had been appointed acting transport minister and published photos of him shaking hands with Putin in the Kremlin.

Asked about Starovoi's sudden departure and Nikitin's quick appointment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "Currently, in the president's opinion, Andrei Nikitin's professional qualifications and experience will best help this service, which the president described as extremely important, fulfill its tasks and functions."
