Albanians spend more time online - AKEP: Internet and phone call consumption is

Albanians are increasingly using the internet and phone calls, while SMS is losing ground. Data on the electronic communications market shows that during the second quarter of the year, internet consumption from mobile networks increased significantly, while time spent on the phone has also expanded.

In the second quarter of the year, internet traffic on mobile networks reached about 77 million GB, an increase of 13% compared to the first quarter. So, in just one quarter, mobile data usage increased by about 9 million GB.

Calls also continue to play a significant role. In Q2, Albanians generated around 975 million minutes of calls, or around 6.4% more than in the previous quarter.

If we look at the entire first half of the year, mobile internet traffic alone reaches around 145 million GB, while phone calls approach 1.9 billion minutes.

But as the internet and phone calls grow, SMS is being used less and less. Data for the first quarter shows that an active user consumed an average of about 11 SMS per month, but this consumption was down by about 12% compared to a year ago. This clearly shows that communication is shifting towards the internet and messaging apps.

There are also changes in the subscriber market itself. At the end of the second quarter, there were about 2.97 million mobile subscribers, about 1% less than in the first quarter. However, the number of active users increased to about 2.49 million, while active mobile phone users reached about 2.47 million.

So, even though the number of SIM cards and subscribers is not increasing, their use is becoming more intensive. Albanians are using the internet more on their phones, talking longer, and resorting less and less to SMS for communication.
