Albania bans meat imports from Brazil/ What is its market weight and how exposed are we to this restriction?
New restrictions on the import of meat from Brazil have come into effect today, following changes approved by the European Union and also reflected by the National Food Authority in Albania.
Brazil was removed from the list of authorized countries for several categories of products of animal origin, after the European Commission stated that it had not received the necessary guarantees for the implementation of requirements related to the use of certain antimicrobial medicinal products.
But how exposed is Albania to this restriction?
INSTAT data shows that during the period January-July 2026, Albania imported a total of about 28.1 thousand tons of meat and edible offal, while 9.2 thousand tons came from Brazil.
This means that Brazil accounted for 32.8% of the total quantity imported, or approximately one in every three kilograms.
Brazil's share in Albanian imports has increased significantly in recent years. In 2021, it provided 16.2% of imports, in 2022 the share increased to 20.8%, in 2023 to 26.6%, while in 2025 it reached 28.8%. Last year, Albania imported about 13.2 thousand tons of meat and offal from Brazil, out of 45.7 thousand tons of total imports.
So, the restriction comes into effect at a time when the dependence of Albanian imports from Brazil has increased and this year has reached approximately one-third of the total.
This could force importers to look to other markets. If alternative supplies are more expensive, this could put pressure on prices, but at this stage it is too early to say whether the measure will directly translate into higher prices for consumers.
It should be noted that INSTAT data includes the entire "meat and edible offal" category, while the new restrictions specifically affect beef and poultry meat.
