Albania, closer to the EU - EC President Von der Leyen: I am impressed by the reforms

Albania has made significant progress on its path towards the European Union. EC President Ursula Von der Leyen, during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, stressed that she is impressed with Albania's reforms towards the EU.
"We all say that the enlargement condition is based on merit and Albania has all the merits. As I said, it is a normal process and to work with reforms for EU Integration. For me, it is impressive to see the progress in these 2-3 years. The Albanian people want EU integration, and they say that these reforms are for us, to strengthen democracy and to become part of the EU. This is obvious. I mentioned SEPA, roaming and the growth plan that is working quite well. Therefore, I can say that I am impressed by the reforms. By 2027, Albania will become part of the EU."
EC President Ursula Von der Leyen said that given the progress Albania is making in opening the group chapters, the second negotiation process will also be fast. While Prime Minister Edi Rama stressed that all group chapters will be closed by 2027.
"The expectation is that within 2027 the chapters will be closed and we must do all the tasks here and they are well-defined chapter by chapter and plus also in the growth plan. So if today we receive such a positive assessment, it comes as a result of the tasks done so far. But in order to continue to receive the assessment, we must continue the tasks and we do not do the tasks as the EU requires, nor to satisfy those who tomorrow will approve our membership in Paris, Berlin or I would say London but London has fled in an unknown direction...or in Rome. We do the tasks for ourselves. Every task that is successfully done here makes Albania stronger and more functional as a state. For us, the process of negotiations, of opening and closing chapters is a process of democratic state-building. When the EU says we have finished ours, it means that Albania receives a certificate that, based on the opinion of the EC, we are a functional democratic state. This is for the Albanians, then we can enter the EU and the improvement process continues."
