In a calm and incident-free atmosphere, Kosovo citizens voted on Sunday to elect mayors and the composition of municipal assemblies. With a turnout of 39.5 percent, the race produced close results in most municipalities, which will go to a runoff.

According to CEC data, 2 million 69 thousand 98 citizens were eligible to vote in these elections, of whom over 800 thousand voted.

In Prishtina, Prizren, Peja, Gjakova and Mitrovica, the race remains open, as none of the candidates secured over 50 percent of the vote. Preliminary results show that 21 municipalities are heading towards the end of the race in the first round.

The Democratic Party of Kosovo won without a runoff in Ferizaj, Skenderaj and Hani i Elezit, but was defeated in its historical bastion, Drenas, by the opposing candidate who was part of the PDK until the last elections, Ramiz Lladrovci.

The Vetëvendosje Movement managed to secure over 50 percent of the votes in Kamenica, Podujevo and Shtime. While the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo won in Deçan and Klina. The Democratic League of Kosovo triumphed in Istog and Lipjan.

Meanwhile, the Serbian List has won without a runoff in most of the Serb-majority municipalities, such as Leposavić, Novobërdë, Štrpce, Zubin-Potok, Zvečan, Gračanica, Ranilug, Partesh and North Mitrovica. But this party will go to a runoff in Kllokot.

Turnout in Sunday's elections is lower compared to the first round in 2021, when just over 43 percent of citizens voted.
