“Shot / Reverse Shot” at GOCAT: When photography turns into dialogue

At the GOCAT Contemporary Art Gallery, “Shot / Reverse Shot” brings a conversation through photography, between a time that seems distant and an Albania that is still in the process of self-understanding. A story that has not yet ended, but that resumes every time it opens its eyes to the past.

Barry Lewis' photographs, taken in 1990–91, are more than documents. They are silent signals that carry the tension, emotion, and uncertainty of a time of change. Today, in front of them, Albanian artists speak, responding not with words, but with works.

"The classical work that is done, over time, also takes on a contemporary dimension because photography as a medium is an art, more widespread as a contemporary art. Therefore, the works of Roland and other members implement this concept in the full sense of the word, " says Burim Myftiu, curator of the exhibition.

Roland Tasho also participates in the exhibition, one of the few who was there, camera in hand, at the same time as Barry Lewis. For Tasho, confronting the past is a condition for understanding the future.

"Without knowing the past properly, you cannot see the future, and there are some very significant photographs that take us back in time but that speak volumes."

Barry Lewis himself returned after more than 30 years to see how Albania has changed, and how it still keeps the memories of that period alive.

“More than 30 years later and I was just amazed. Always after '91, people have been friendly. I haven't met anyone who wasn't happy to talk to me – but in 1990 it was very different.”

“Shot / Reverse Shot” is more than a retrospective. It is an attempt to bridge the gaps between generations, to transform images into invitations to understand, not only the place, but also oneself.

The exhibition is realized by GOCAT with the support of the MANE Foundation, as part of the commitment to supporting art, memory and dialogue and will remain open to the public as always free of charge until September 7th.
