Increasing cybersecurity in energy - ERE changes rules, obligations for ISO standard within 18 months
The Energy Regulatory Authority has approved changes to the regulation on cybersecurity of critical infrastructures in the energy sector.
The changes include updating institutional references, expanding the scope of application of the regulation in the natural gas sector, including new critical infrastructures and strengthening cybersecurity measures, and according to the ERE, they are necessary to ensure compliance with the new legal framework.
They also aim to harmonize the regulation with national obligations, fulfilling the recommendations of the Resolution of the Albanian Parliament and ensuring a secure and stable electricity and natural gas market.
An important aspect of the changes is the obligation for operators to be certified according to the ISO 27001 security standard within 18 months, increasing effective protection against cyber risks. These include Kurum International, Dragobia Energy, Prell energy, Power Elektrik Slabinje, Seka Hydropower, Devoll Hydropower and Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).
The same obligation will also apply to operators of important information infrastructures, such as: the Electricity Distribution Operator, the Vlora Thermal Power Plant and the Vlushe Hydroelectric Power Plant.
According to the Regulatory Entity, the approval of these additions and changes is essential for the stable and secure operation of critical and important infrastructures in the electricity and natural gas sectors.
