About 7.14 euros per month for mobile packages - AKEP: Albanians' expenses, lower than the European Union average
Albanians spend an average of 7.14 euros per month on mobile services, i.e. for internet packages, minutes, or SMS. According to the Annual Report of the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP), the spending of Albanian citizens on mobile packages is at the lowest levels of European countries and lower than the average of 11.09 euros per month of the 28 countries of the European Economic Area (EEA).
However, compared to other countries in the region, we spend more on mobile services.
On the other hand, retail tariffs for fixed broadband access (internet only) for download speeds of 12 Mbps to less than 30 Mbps, as well as for integrated fixed broadband internet packages plus telephone or TV services, are also lower than average tariffs in the EU.
In 2016, fixed internet in Albania was much more expensive compared to EU countries in relation to income. But in 2024, the price has dropped significantly and is now cheaper than the European Union average. The latest data from the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority shows that in 2016, the monthly fee for fixed broadband access service (internet only) for basic speeds of 12 Mbps to less than 30 Mbps offered by the main fixed operator was 4799 Lekë/34 Euro, while in 2024 it was 1200 Lekë/12 Euro, lower than in 2016 and than the European Union average.
Among the objectives of the United Nations Broadband Commission for Sustainable Internet Development is that by 2025, broadband access spending should not exceed 2% of gross per capita income.
The data shows that spending on most of the International Telecommunication Union baskets has been below the 2% level of gross income in Albania since 2015 and only in a few cases above this limit. Also, despite the increase in 2023, spending on all five baskets, namely for internet, fixed broadband and others, is within the 2% limit.
