Rama: Protests, a reflection of Albania's new phase of expectations

Socialist Party Chairman and Prime Minister Edi Rama declared today that governance has entered a new phase, where citizens no longer judge based on past shortcomings, but on expectations for a higher quality of life and services.
In his speech during the Socialist Party parliamentary group meeting, Rama focused on the need for a new approach to communicating with citizens, emphasizing that the government's facts and achievements are no longer enough to meet society's expectations.
"We have an arsenal of facts to respond to lies, slander and accusations, but our facts are no longer enough," Rama said.
"Therefore, the first lesson I want to share with you is that our facts are no longer enough. Because in the Albania that we radically transformed, people no longer live with either the satisfaction of the changes that occur, or the encouragement of the things that are built. As was the case until yesterday, when they confidently expected that, after the school, road or garden that was built in the other neighborhood, it would be the turn of the road, school or garden in their neighborhood. Today, they live with expectations that grow faster than our ability to respond," he said.
Rama stopped at the protest on Flamingo Boulevard, as he labeled it, describing it not as a protest, but as a mirror of society that should serve as a reflection.
"This was a mirror that society put before us to see ourselves and to understand whether we have the mind and heart in the right place to govern Albania in this new phase," said Rama.
Rama said that in that mirror he sees the end of the era of shortages and the beginning of the era of expectations.
According to the head of government, in the past, the construction of a road, a school or a garden was experienced as a collective victory, while today these are considered standards that citizens expect as a given.
"In the era of expectations, the new path is a standard, not a victory. Good service is taken for granted and any shortcomings are tolerated less and less," Rama said.
Prime Minister Rama referred to scholar Alexis de Tocqueville, recalling his warning that the most dangerous moment for a government is precisely when it begins to change things.
According to Rama, this is the reality that the government faces today, as the country continues the process of development and transformation in order to increase the well-being of its citizens.
