Agron Shehaj's proposal: Euro, national currency - According to him,

It has been proposed several times that the euro be Albania's national currency, as about 60% of trade is carried out with European Union countries.

The latest proposal comes from the leader of the "Mundësia" party, Agron Shehaj, as according to him, citizens lose a total of around 100 million euros per year from transactions at currency exchange points alone.

"In Albania, according to the Bank of Albania, about 20 billion euros are exchanged every year and 0.5% of this amount is about 100 million euros per year. All citizens, entrepreneurs bring money to Albania, spending about 100 million euros per year to exchange euros for lek. With the adoption of the euro instead of lek, Albanian citizens will automatically save about 100 million euros per year."

But, according to the leader of the "Opportunity" party, this will not be the only benefit.

"In addition to the benefit they will have in Albania's economic and financial stability, which will have lower interest rates for loans, the economy will be more attractive to foreign investors, who certainly prefer to invest in euros and not in a foreign currency."

In 2024, the exchange rate was accompanied by a deep decline in the euro and a strong appreciation of the lek. The decline of the euro caused numerous consequences for the Albanian economy, with exporting businesses being the most damaged.
